What: Chadderton Day 2023 Family Fun Day

Where: Foxdenton Hall, Foxdenton Lane, Chadderton, nr Oldham

When: 11am-4pm, 8-9 July 2023

We’re delighted to be returning to the fantastic grounds of Foxdenton Hall in Chadderton for Chadderton Day 2023 – with an expanded event including a skirmish featuring the clash of swords, the crack of muskets, and the boom of cannon.

Step back into the 17th Century with a military encampment, live drill displays, and battle re-enactments by the Earl of Manchester’s Regiment of Foote and their friends from The Sealed Knot. Learn about life during the 1600s and the English Civil War, and then watch as Cavalier and Roundhead battle for control of the hall.

With fun for all the family, as well as Lydia’s Tearoom and stalls, this is a community event not to be missed!

Timetable

11.30am – Living History Guided Tour: follow a guided tour of the living history encampment. Meet the soldiers, hear the stories of ordinary people, and watch tempers flare over a gambling debt!

2pm – The Fight for Foxdenton Hall: the garrison of soldiers turns on each other, as cannon fire and musket crack in a thrilling skirmish!

A grade II* listed early 18th Century house, built on the foundations of a previous hall built in 1620 for William Ratclyffe. William Radclyffe and his oldest son Robert fought and died at the Battle of Edgehill in 1642, so it fell to his third son William (pictured left) to continue the estate. He also fought for the King in the Civil War and was knighted on the field at the Battle of Lostwithiel in 1644, and became a Colonel under Lord Hopton. The family was nearly ruined by the fines on the estate after the Parliamentarian victory.
