On the edge of Oxford’s defences, Abingdon was on the front lines of the English and was garrisoned by the Royalists in 1642, with churches used as barracks and the town overcrowded with soldiers. On 17 April 1644, King Charles and Queen Henrietta Maria and their two older sons came to Abingdon, staying overnight at Barton House, just outside the town. A Royalist blunder in 1644 left the town open to occupation by the Parliamentarians, who demolished Abingdon’s famed market cross. The Royalists later made three failed attempts to retake Abingdon, only the third coming close to success.
