What a final event of the season! We garrisoned the stunning ruins of Whittington Castle for a weekend of living history, skirmishing, and great fun!
Deep in the heart of the Shropshire countryside between Oswestry and Shrewsbury, the castle is believed to be the first in the UK which is owned and run by the local community. The village of Whittington acquired a 99-year lease to manage the ruins that sits at its heart and, in 2007, the castle was re-opened to visitors after a restoration with the assistance of a £950k grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
It’s a brilliant location for a reenactment and it was an absolute pleasure to work with the trustees of the castle to deliver a great weekend bringing the English Civil War alive with demonstrations of arms and armour, leatherworking, woodworking, and authentic cooking. Then it was time for the Royalists to sally forth from the ruins of the castle and be soundly beaten back – but not until the women and children had given them a sound thrashing! (Only joking, but it was a fantastically fun ‘skirmish’ with lots of great acting from even the youngest of our members!)
It’s been an incredible summer of events and now that the weather is closing in it’s time for the regiment to go into winter quarters. Fear not though, there’ll still be special events over the winter and we’ll still be bringing you lots more history from the 17th Century as well as updates on our activities.
In the meantime, here are just a few photos from a great weekend with fantastic people. If you think this looks like fun, make sure you make an early New Year’s resolution and join us for what’s promising to be a great reenactment season in 2020 – visit our website now to discover the many roles on and off the battlefield, and be a part of a great bunch having a lot of fun!
