Now THAT was a bit of a scorcher! The Earl of Manchester’s returned to Culcheth in Cheshire for a blazing hot weekend of history!

Our members set up our tented encampment on Mill Field opposite The Raven Inn on Warrington Road, bringing the sights, sounds and – considering the temperature reached over 30° – smells of the 17th Century: cooks labouring over fires to feed the troops, apothecaries and surgeons offering differing cures for common ailments, a blacksmith repairing armour on his anvil, woodworkers and scriveners, tailors offering the latest fashions, spies decoding secrets, printers peddling broadside ballads, and even a seller of a rather strong new drink from the New World called … ‘coffee’?

Come on a tour of our living history camp! The Earl of Manchester’s Regiment of Foote returned to Culcheth in Cheshire for a blazing hot weekend of history. It’s always very British to mention the weather but this weekend was pretty exceptional, with the whole country hit by a massive heatwave. So while keeping cool was the order of the day (luckily one of the food traders was serving some rather refreshing mocktails!) our members braved the heat to bring history alive.

It’s a scorcher! What a day at Mill Field in Culcheth – well done to everyone who braved the sizzling temperatures to visit our living history encampment and watch the skirmish! it was hot work but we loved it! We welcomed a brand new member, James, to the regiment at this event, and it was the second event for new members Lizzie, Tom & Selina, and Robin, while it was great to see Karen & her family, who joined us during one of their semi-regular returns to the country. Plus there was the triumphant return of long-lost musketeer Jonathan who brought with him the Lady Ann, the regiment’s cannon, which we’re hoping to have up and firing very soon.

We love events like this, which allow our members to demonstrate traditional skills they’ve learned, from herbal remedies to musketball forging – and also pass them onto the next generation, with young Max trying his hand at wordturning and blacksmithing’ maybe his parents will apprentice him soon!

Things got hotter when the troops walked onto the field of battle, putting on a great show recreating the ambush at Culcheth of retreating Scottish troops by local militia under Sir John Holcroft in 1651.

Once battle was over, it was time to cool down – and not only was a chilled drink at The Raven Inn across the road most welcome, but the regimental awning glowed with lanterns and fairy lights as the sun went down and, after celebrating the birthdays of our wonderful members Erin and Veronica, great conversation with great people flowed late into the night…

Don’t miss the moments that make it all worthwhile – the quiet moments, the simple ones, the ecstatic ones, the learning ones, the ones you share with the people who make it happen. Weekends, especially really, really hot ones, can be hard work but we are so extraordinarily blessed with the people who get to share these moments with, both within our regiment and our friends in other regiments like the @Royalist Baggage Trayne. What a wonderful weekend, spent with the people who matter. #friends #friendship #FriendsForever #SpendingTimeTogether #fun #TheWeekend #GoodTimes #GreatTimes #EarlOfManchestersRegimentOfFoote #SealedKnot #MattBerry #TakeMyHand #FYP #ForYouPage #Engage #Connect #CapCut

We suspect the queue for the ice cream van tells you everything you need to know about the weekend!
