This May Bank Holiday weekend, the Marquess of Newcastle’s Regiment of Foote and the Sealed Knot will be taking over the former home of one of the key figures in English Civil War history…
Wentworth Woodhouse is a Grade I listed stately home in South Yorkshire and was the home of Charles I’s advisor and friend Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, whose execution was a major factor in the build up to the outbreak of the Civil Wars. It was in the house’s Yellow Bedroom that Thomas learnt of his fate and he was executed on Tower Hill in London in May 1641.
Take a more hands-on approach to history by seeing us in costume, handling some of our weapons and equipment, and learning about cookery, clothes, education and 17th Century politics, alongside strategies and tactics.
Things kick off at 10.15am as the troops march down to the ‘living history’ encampment, with performances at 10.45am, 12pm, and 2.30pm.
From 11.15am you can meet the soldiers and experience a little bit of life during the English Civil Wars – and at 12.30pm even kids can volunteer to join the ranks and try and little 17th Century drill for themselves!

Wentworth Woodhouse has the longest façade of any country house in England. It stands in 87 acres of gardens and grounds and has extensive views over former parkland, including a deer park and lakes, which are vested in the Fitzwilliam Wentworth Amenity Trust.
